"Like a Girl" is a compliment

Because when you can live fully in the belief that when you have enough and you are enough, that’s when the real fun begins.

- Liz Bohannon

I never really thought of myself as a part of the women’s liberation movement or an activist. In fact, my mom always proudly stated that she would much rather have help changing her tire than do it herself, but common respect and consideration I do actively wish for all humans.

My daughter was just starting to get into lifting weights at college when she was approached by a fellow classmate who said “You lift like a girl …” to which she replied “Dude, I AM a girl!” She was really offended and whatever chance this guy had of flirting or getting a date went right out the window and she experienced her very first “girl pride” moment.

So this fall, I’m sending her back to school with her very own “Like a Girl” tee shirt, made by our beautiful artisans in Uganda. This super high quality tee will promote the pride she has in her sex and in herself. Women are gifted and strong and confident and beautiful. Whoever said anything was wrong with being a woman is a really idiot.

One of the first questions any Sseko Designs Sister asks when opening a Trunk Show is which of these quotes means the most to each guest. “Like a Girl” is our most common response.

On August 1st, Sseko Designs is taking this saying to the streets! This is your opportunity to take your girl-power to the streets daily! $40 for the tee shirt in size 1 or 2. Also available in a shopper tote for $20.

I’d love to see all our young ladies sporting this tee - and what better way than to show them how!

GIVEAWAY: for every sale that includes 2 tee shirts, or a tee shirt and a shopper tote, I will give you one of our not yet released yet beautiful red leather coin purse. Yours for FREE when you show your pride “Like a Girl”.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning, is now and forever shall be, world without end … Amen.

This past week, I participated in a group praying the rosary for our family friend, Frank who recently passed away. This simple act reminded me how proud i am to be a Catholic. The solemnity of the rosary, particularly in a group, is a meditation of sorts. We pray in combined reflection and the simple repeating of these prayers of our youth helps us be in touch with ourselves, each other and the person we are praying for. I watched as the family felt our strength and love - and it took me back to my own time - walking the hospital hallways 6 years ago waiting for news of whether my mom would survive her life-saving heart procedure. I must have repeated the rosary at least 2 dozen times over the course of those 48-hours. It helped me stay calm and prepare for God’s plan to unfold.

My mom grew up in rural Eastern Washington. When she was small, she and her siblings helped their parents work as migrant farm hands. They moved from place to place picking crops and mom once told me their religion was whatever church or preacher was closest. My grandma was born of a Pentecostal minister, and when my mom’s family finally moved to Spokane, they were drawn to the Pentecostal church.

Skip forward a few years and my mom and dad met at a Chinese restaurant in Spokane. My dad was a proud and faithful Catholic, attending church every Sunday no matter where on the planet he inhabited that week, brought my mom to church with him. She once told me “it only took 1 Sunday for me to know that this was the place for me.” The quiet contemplation, the togetherness in prayer, the knowledge that these traditions and practices had been handed down for centuries, not to mention the beauty in the Catholic art and symbolism that surrounded her in the church drew her to this new faith. She converted not long after they were married and was a devout Catholic until her death. All 6 of my siblings were brought up Catholic and despite all the teasing and negative reports I’ve received related to my religion, I still practice and have confidently raised my girls as Catholics.

Being one of the oldest religions in the world, Catholics comprise more than 50% of the world’s faithful. And while I certainly don’t condone or defend the abuse from priests, coming from a court background, this certainly isn’t the only religion who has abuses against children or attempts for religions to cover them up. The sheer size and reputation of the Catholic faith brings the issue front and center in the news. I am still incredibly proud of my faith and support our decision to send our girls to Catholic schools, just as Dave and I were blessed to do.

The majority of the people I come in contact with are Christians. We all share a basic belief in Jesus, the story of his birth, the belief in morality and following his teachings in the New Testament. Do good. Be kind. Follow the Golden Rule. Mom told me once that she viewed a person’s religious choice as a matter of personality. She’d not felt at home in her childhood churches where speaking out and laying on of hands when the Lord moved your spirit was not comforting for her. Preferring instead the quiet traditions of a Catholic Mass. Therefore, I’ve never once considered objecting to others choices in their religion. However, and to my great disappointment, I have been forced to defend my choice as a Catholic. I have been asked to defend “Catholic exercises”, “our boring and monotonous” masses, the actions of our priests, the Pope, the amount of money and property in the Vatican, the fact we don’t “study the bible as much as other Christian churches”, why we “worship” saints and on and on. Some people I avoid simply because I was tired of defending my level of faith against what they believed was weaker than their own.

My Catholic faith brings me closer to God, my parents, my husband and my children. It is with quiet reflection that I hold tight to my rosary beads and sit in meditation, reflecting on Frank’s life and helping his family grieve his passing, as once they did when my parents took the same journey. It’s comforting to know I belong to this worldwide network of Christians and wherever I, or my daughters, travel in this world, we can enter a Catholic Church and follow the Mass, no matter what the language, while we pray forgiveness for our sins, appreciate God’s gifts and hope our loved ones find eternal rest beside the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

memories of Mom, Mexico and ladybugs

lifestyleGabby Jacobsen
public.jpeg

My mom purchased an Executive Suite Condo at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach around 2001 before the beautiful resort on the West side of the Baja peninsula was even completed. The resort spans the entire hillside right along the Pacific Ocean. You almost can’t get any further South on the Baja unless you’re in the private home community housing the rich and famous like Oprah. Mom saw the potential of a great place to vacation, gift weeks to family and have a little something to pass down to her kids.

To be honest, at first the thought of bringing our 8-year old, medically fragile daughter and the other one, who at 6-years old had a tendency to run off if you weren’t looking, was quite daunting. In fact, that first family vacation we traded her week in Mexico to spend 2 weeks in Hawaii. THAT was an experience of a LIFETIME because not only did we have the 4 of us, we had mom, one of my older brothers and my mom’s brother, Uncle Art, along on our adventure. And because 7 wasn’t enough, we went to the Big Island of Hawaii where one of my mom’s other brothers, Uncle Ed, lived. So we spent a glorious 2 weeks on excursions and generally having one hellofa great time. It’s something we’ll never forget … but how do we top that?

Two years later, we were ready for another adventure … Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach was completely built and ready for visitors. Still, were we ready for a trip to Mexico? Dave, Mom and I had all been there before, and we experienced areas where safety was in question and water needed to be boiled. A little research held that the entire resort was all set for its U.S. cousins - every faucet and pool and restaurant on the resort was pre-filtered water. It had 5 pools, numerous restaurants and gas powered golf carts which brought us to anywhere on the resort we wanted to go. They outfitted us with a building where our disabled kiddo could travel right from our condo door, down the elevator and into the pool. The building also was the location of the Kids Club, a gathering for the little kids from all over the world with background-checked counselors who brought the kids on resort excursions, played games, planned movies, arts and crafts and even meals for the kids in their care. So basically, our youngest spent nearly the entire week there with her “new friends” and even some off hours when the counselors would request they bring her along on the fun “counselor only” volleyball games in the main pool or down to the beach to build sandcastles. She was the leader of the group and whether they spoke English or not, she made sure everyone was involved and would even go round them up at their condos to ask them to join in the fun. Once again, we had my older brother with us, but we’d also brought along one of my older sisters, her husband, Uncle Art again and one of my best friends, Rita, from her home in Mexico City. There was 10 family on our first Mexican adventure … and Mom purchased an upgrade to a Presidential Suite so we could accommodate our growing group. We played card games, ate, relaxed, spent a day in town and really reconnected.

We’d traveled back to Mexico 1 more time before my mom died in 2013.

Dave and I have kept her memory alive by returning to Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach every other year since her death. The first time I had trouble breathing when my friend Rita and I hugged for the first time since we’d lost her. It was a celebration of sorts, to thank her for this beautiful gift. Rita hadn’t been able to travel to the states for her memorial, and so this was delayed grieving for both of us. Rita has vowed to always join us when we come to Mexico and continues to try to convince me to make a side trip to Mexico City again. I’m working on it …. !

Next month will be our 3rd time back since 2013. And once again, I will revel in the opportunity for my family, including my sister/friend, Rita, and her family to spend dedicated time together in the sunshine. I will wake up every morning with my book and cup of tea, sit on the balcony and watch the sunrise, just like Mom always did. It pleased her to see my girls swim and have fun with their dad, my brother and her brothers.

After my mom passed, we started seeing ladybugs - one landed on the car near her burial niche, at the church during her funeral service, and each and every time we arrive at our condo in Mexico, we’ve found a single one roaming near the patio. I’m Catholic, and I don’t believe that my mom returned as a ladybug, but I do feel a bit like these signs are Mom’s way of telling me that she’s close. Believing that she’s proud of the adventures that she had a hand in starting and that we will continue to have until Dave and I are unable to travel … thank you Mom! See you in Mexico!

Chloe + Isabel closing

But let’s roll out a new collection anyway!

Announcing the release of 3 new collections …

Travalera De Puebla

Status Links

Dandelyan Pave

All for 30% off

I can’t say as I have ever seen an online retailer stay open to offer big discounts to customers on remaining inventory, but then release 3 new collections only 2 weeks away from closing its doors forever. The designers must have been in production long before the corporate big bosses decided to shut down the company. But it’s definitely our gain! Let me give you a little overview of the collections and what I’m picking up before July 31st.

public.jpeg

Travalera De Puebla

Inspired by the storied traditions of Spanish Tavalera pottery, this necklace, featuring deep shades of blue and green paired with acrylic pearl, brings artisan intricacies to life in one stunning statement piece.

This collection features a long necklace, statement earrings and statement bracelet. Of course, the necklace could be paired with its counterpart for maximum convertibility with the next collection, the Status Links.

public.jpeg

Status Links

Every wardrobe deserves the classic stylings of the Status Links. Shiny gold and attention to detail with three lengths put this piece on constant rotation.

I love the simplicity of this set and that the necklace has a 4” extender to allow for greater flexibility. The earrings could easily be paired with the Tavalera De Puebla and features a necklace, statement earrings, slide bracelet and ring.

public.jpeg

Dandelyan

Apparently this dandelyn stone was created for Chloe + Isabel. It’s beautiful pink and green glass stone makes a statement! The necklace is dreamy and goes from short to very long, something you don’t always see in our very “Isabel-like” pieces. The ring is a definite statement with its princess cut center stone surrounded by pave diamonds around the band. I can see this one becoming your most swoon-worthy piece and one that makes your friends jealous because it can no longer be found. Pair with any of the matching earrings or petite bracelet and you can go from lunch with the girls to rocker chic night out.

My Cart is in a constant state of flux, but currently I have the Tavalera De Puebla necklace in the cart specifically for my upcoming trip to Mexico. I’m going to pair it with my flowy, grey/white pin striped sundress/coverup and heels since I’m packing light and Mexico in August is bound to be warm. I also have the Status necklace and statement earrings in my cart for every day wear. I love how the necklace is petite but longer - I never stray too far away from necklaces below my collarbone. I keep going back and forth, but for now the Dandelyan ring and drop earrings are still in my cart. This stone is so gorgeous and I know my daughters will be head over heels for them if I decide to pass them along.

This shall be my final purchase with Chloe + Isabel and if you follow my IG account you’ll know that I’m selling off/giving away many of my inventory pieces, but recently made my favorite purchase of acryllic storage boxes from the Container Store (30% off now) to store those favorite pieces I will be keeping. (Photo below …)

Following the recent C+I corporate trend, another sale is right on the heels of the Anniversary sale. Christmas in July is clearing the racks with up to 80% off, including 30% off on all the NEW collections.

Only 2 weeks left to pick up your piece of history

My latest treasure chest. Just the favorites I’m keeping close to my heart.

Sseko birthday sale - day 6

More bags!!

Some of my favorites this time!!

Day 6 brings you all the cool and trendy bags from the spring/summer season. My favorite being the Woven Stripe bag - it’s so cool with it’s black and white design. It literally goes with everything and I find myself grabbing it more and more often. It reminds me of that California cool factor ..

The spring/summer line is all sorts of beautiful colors! I own the Shopper Tote in the Orchid You Not pink and it’s a stand out piece for everyday. The cross body strap makes it one of my favorites because I love being hands free. It’s soft and supple and has an outside pocket that I can slip my phone and VW key into.

These summer designs are on sale now for 40% off but only today! After midnight, they go back to full price. So many customers have been dying for these pieces at these prices that they’re selling out quickly! I even missed out on something I had my eye on 2 days ago .. so if you love it .. click purchase!

Wow! It's a miracle!

Fashion, Chloe + Isabel, lifestyleGabby Jacobsen

I’m blaming my old eyes for this sudden miracle … because it’s the little surprises in life that make a day just go better.

I put off ordering the Blooms of Kyoto earrings until the closing of Chloe + Isabel was announced because I just hesitated wearing these beautiful statement earrings to work. And those of you who know me, I rarely purchase any fashion that can’t perform double duty in my office. But I purchased this dress from J.Jill that has tiny white flowers and they just needed these earrings. So I took the leap - figuring “hey, they’re on sale and should go with this dress to maybe fancier events” … but lo and behold … I received them on Saturday and decided to put the dress on today for work. Looked at the earrings to see how they looked with the dress and the CONVERTIBLE PIECE AT THE BOTTOM SLIPPED OFF! Hello Dolly … now they’re the perfect size large studs! I’d missed the fine print (and numerous pictures) showing the convertibility. Duh …

My day has officially just gotten better. Now I may go back for the red! Only $34 while supplies last.

Best Day of the Sseko sale is here!

The best sale day has arrived

But only for 24 hours!!

And it’s here! I’ve having a difficult time not clicking that “Purchase” button on the beautiful Carryall Travel bag. You see, Sseko travel collection doesn’t go on sale, even for us Sseko Sisters! This is a rare opportunity to own a gorgeous piece of luggage.

Should I bite the bullet and bring this baby with me to Mexico??

Life - a constant state of change

Special or crazy

who knows …

It takes a special kind of person (or a crazy one) to make a career change after 25 years in one industry. I must be really special because not only did I leave the legal field and my work with the Superior court in order to stay home with nearly adult children, but seriously took a left turn when I joined the healthcare industry as an Executive Assistant to a hospital Chief Operating Officer, Board of Directors (and now for the Chief Nursing Officer as well).

This is literally the first time I have ever worked in a corporate setting. Where budgets and FTEs and decisions coming down from many many levels above me is a strange experience. But, I have to admit, I love the human interaction and the idea that for right now, I’m happy working in my community and not tied to downtown Seattle or what the jurors are doing. Learning a set of new Executive Assistant skills don’t suck either!

It’s a very different world filled with words and acronyms that I don’t understand. Titles and organizational charts. Executives and the knowledge that I am a tiny cog in a very big, national healthcare wheel. I also have received more immunizations than I’ve ever had in my life! Big changes - but I’m enjoying the change. I like the executives that I get the honor of working with daily and I love meeting new people. At court, the staff wasn’t entirely concerned with customer service. It wasn’t part of our job description and although I tried greeting everyone with a smile and a helping hand, our department wasn’t evaluated on customer experience. The fact was that we were one of the friendlier departments and known for our relaxed and customer service orientated demeanor. In healthcare, it’s all about patient experience, which allows me to smile and invite conversation. You know, customer service! I’m at my desk most of the day - but when I need human interaction, it’s just outside my door.

My mom always said that learning new things is a great way to keep your mind active. She loved hanging out with my daughters because the constant calendar and having to remember which bag went with which kid helped keep her sharp. I think she’d be proud of my change of career and would immediately change all her doctors to ones I support. Just because … that’s how she rolls.

For now, I’m very much enjoying life with my husband during our much more frequent date nights, trips to our vacation home to enjoy the sunshine on the river and visiting with friends and most especially the opportunities I have to enjoy my daughters as adults and seeing how very much they are just like Dave and I. Sarcastic and kind with a side of laughter at all times.

Happy belated Fourth of July and cheers to a summer where the weather hasn’t been horrible and the Columbia River current takes all my worries away.
